DJ Envy on the Importance of Education
On November 10, 2016, DJ Envy of Power 105.1’s “The Breakfast Club” Morning Show visited Lincoln Tech’s Union, NJ campus and met with students from the auto, HVAC, and electrical/electronic systems career training t¶.
Afterwards he sat down to talk with us about his own career path and about why it’s important to continue your education after high school.
Q &A with DJ Envy of Power 105.1
Why would you say it’s important for students to continue their education after high school?
I feel it's important for students to continue their education after high school because they need that advantage, they need that opportunity. With so many [people] looking for jobs, what’s going to make you different from [the competition]? Continuing your education is the key.
Lots of people love cars, and know early on they want to have a career working on them. How would you encourage someone who’s unsure about their future to explore other fields like HVAC, electronics, or manufacturing?
There's so many different fields and so many different things that you could possibly do, but you probably don't know much about them. I didn't know anything about HVAC until I got here and actually took a class – and I actually enjoyed it. Or changing oil. I mean, I'm a car guy but I never got that deep into it.
So there's so many different fields. The other day [at Lincoln Tech] I learned about electricity. I learned how to bend a pipe at a 90-degree angle. There's so many different things that you could possibly do, you just have to give it a shot and try.
People who listen to your show know you’re a serious car enthusiast. Where did that interest start?
I love automobiles, I love cars. I think it started for me growing up in Queens, dreaming and watching TV and seeing all of these expensive cars driving in the city. I remember the [first time I saw] a Lamborghini and got so geeked as a kid. When I saw my first Ferrari I said, "One day I'm going to own one." And I just fell in love with automobiles.
How did you settle on your own career path after high school?
Well, I knew I wanted to be a DJ as soon as I graduated high school. I mean, I just loved it, and they always say you do something that you love, do something that you enjoy. I didn't look at it as a career – it was a hobby that I made into a career. It was something that I loved doing and I wanted to learn, to finesse and to master it.
What do you like about the Lincoln Tech campuses you’ve seen and the people you’ve met? Why would you recommend that students train at these schools for their future career?
My favorites, you’d probably think, are [the Automotive Technology campuses], but it’s actually the health [schools]. I think healthcare is absolutely, positively the career that would interest me if I wasn't a DJ.
So I'm telling you out there, really take a look into all of the t¶ [at Lincoln Tech] and really give yourself an opportunity. You know, there's a lot of people looking for jobs. You want to make sure you get the job before they do. Lincoln Tech is the way!
