What is CNC Manufacturing?
June 10, 2021 - Article updated to include the East Windsor CT campus.
In a world that relies on advanced technology, it is no surprise that computerized numerical control machining, or CNC machining, is more prevalent than ever. But what exactly is CNC manufacturing? This method of manufacturing uses computer ÑÇÖÞÍø¼t¶µã to control machine tools that create close-tolerance high-quality parts. The method of manufacturing frees up manpower for additional tasks while allowing for precise results on a repeatable basis.
What Is CNC Machining
The CNC process involves using computer-aided design (CAD) and computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) ÑÇÖÞÍø¼t¶µã written in proprietary code called G-Code and M-Code. These ÑÇÖÞÍø¼t¶µã control features like raw material feed rate, piece positioning, and cutting speed. A set of ÑÇÖÞÍø¼t¶µã are written and uploaded into the machine's computer memory. This controls the machine's movements on a scale that is accurate down to +/-0.005" tolerances.
There are a few companies that build quality CNC machines, such as Haas Manufacturing. Haas machines are extremely dependable and are used by Lincoln Tech to train new CNC Machinists. Since HAAS machines are used prolifically within the manufacturing industry, this experience often translates directly to the work environment for the new graduate.
Where You Can Learn CNC Machining
Haas supports the program at the East Windsor CT, Indianapolis IN, Mahwah NJ and Grand Prairie Texas campuses. As Grand Prairie Campus President Cory Hughes says, “Haas has been a leading global provider of CNC machines and tools for more than 30 years ... this gives us the opportunity to train our students on industry-leading equipment."
To learn how to program and operate a CNC machines, as well as many other highly specialized machines, please visit the CNC Machining and Manufacturing program at Lincoln Tech. Upon graduation, you will have gained the experience and knowledge needed to enter the modern manufacturing industry.
